St. Cyprian, the third century Bishop of Carthage in North Africa, is most widely known for articulating a clear view of the nature of the Church. The views he expressed went largely unquestioned up until the time of the Reformation in the sixteenth century. The translations of his works, with introduction and notes presented here are largely the fruit of a continuing research project begun at the British School in Rome in 1999. They are the work of Allen Brent, Professor of Early Christian History and Literature at St. Edmund's College,Cambridge.

A new translation of an ancient but timely work from the great sixth century Pope of Rome who sponsored the mission of St. Augustine to evangelise the English. Recognised as the most thorough pastoral treatise of the patristic era the duties and obligations of clergy are addressed in four parts: the appropriate selection of clergy; the life that a pastor should lead; how to discern and bring healing of sins in different types of people; how to guard against egoism and personal ambition. Complimented by an informative introduction this is essential reading for all concerned with effective pastoral ministry.

In the Orthodox Church St Gregory of Nazianzus (ca. 329–ca. 390) is known as "the Theologian," a title he shares only with the Evangelist John. Perhaps best known for his "Five Theological Orations", this is a new translation of his distinct "Festal Orations." In the context of festal proclamation and celebration St Gregory articulates his own theology and the doctrines he proclaims are inseparably intertwined with his pastoral teachings about Christian life.

Evagrius Ponticus (AD 343–399 ) spent sixteen years in the desert of Egypt, where he gained the gift of insight into the human soul. His writings influenced the theology of John Cassian, Diadochus of Photike, Maximus the Confessor, and Palladius. Evagrius' image of the human being, profoundly biblical, allowed for a perceptive understanding of anger, its causes, consequences and cures. His major study on the topic—not ordinarily covered in works of theology—appears here in the English language for the first time and offers timeless wisdom on struggling with this passion.

The spiritual counsels of Mark, a fifth century monk in Asia Minor, are equally rich in theological insight and historical interest. His writings were deeply valued by Byzantine ascetics, were circulated during the Reformation, and were read by Lutheran divines and Roman theologians. The general level of interest in his works during the first half of the second millennium is eloquently reported in a fourteenth century manuscript, as a slogan often repeated by monastics and ascetics: “Sell everything and buy Mark.” His words on taking responsibility for one another out of love, his practical advice on the need for repentance, and his strident emphasis on the kind of unity evident in Christ directly relate to modern Christians and may provide a useful point of departure for ecumenical dialogue.

St Basil’s homilies on the subject of wealth and poverty, although delivered in the fourth century, remain utterly fresh and contemporary. Whether you possess great wealth or have modest means, at the heart of Basil’s message stands the maxim: Simplify your life, so you have something to share with others. While some patristic texts relate to obscure and highly philosophical questions, Basil’s teachings on social issues are immediately understood and applicable. At a time when vast income disparity, overuse of limited environmental resources, and global climate change are becoming matters of increasing concern, Basil’s message is more relevant now than ever before.
