Bede was a monk at a monastery at Wearmouth, Northumbria and then at Jarrow. He is of one of the great Fathers of the English Church and nation. This is a very readable translation of some of his Gospel homilies related to the church calendar. They have a timeless quality full of passion and poetry.

These sermons are seen as "an effective guide for those who seek a religion that gives meaning to their lives" because St Gregory is more concerned that the Scripture he is expounding has a personal and intimate meaning for the hearer than he is in discussing intellectual controversies of the day.
