WITNESS IN THE HOLY LAND

Author: MARIA C. KHOURY, ED. D. #: 10711
This well-written book brings to our attention the intolerable conditions under which Palestinian Christians and others live in the Holy Land. The author, a noted Orthodox writer who lives there, describes vividly the inhuman conditions she experiences. The chapters literally bring tears to one`s eyes. Her experiences foster awareness of the dramatically diminishing Christian presence in the land where the faith began. The author serves as a witness as she tries to bring to light the truth of what is happening and to change people`s minds and hearts.

CHILDREN IN THE CHURCH TODAY: AN ORTHODOX PERSPECTIVE

Author: SISTER MAGDALEN #: 10718
If the aim of our life is to reach divine life, this means that every moment has extremely great significance; every aspect of our life needs to be treated with wisdom. Human wisdom, though, is not enough for life according to the commandments of Christ; without Christ we cannot accomplish anything divine. God offers us His very life, but we are forever His creatures, and this means practically, that the question for us all — not only for spiritual fathers — is to ask God about what to do, what to say, and how to express what we say. In the upbringing of children, a knowledge of child psychology, or even a fine intuition about one`s own children will not lead to eternal being unless we also invite divine grace by prayer.

ORDER OF CREATION/ORDER OF REDEMPTION: THE ORDINATION OF WOMEN IN THE ORTHODOX CHURCH

Author: #: 10727
An idea growing in popularity among some Orthodox over the last few decades has been the admission of women to the sacerdotal priesthood. The source for this idea is not the Scriptures, the Fathers, the Councils of the Church, but comes to us from the world, specifically the feminist movement. It has implications for the secularization of the Church. On one level, advocates view the ordination of women as something owed the female sex, a sign of the Church’s repentance, so to speak, atonement for the centuries of female stereotyping and powerlessness, that is to say, denying her the right to creatively express her ingenuity, to exercise her freedom and to exhibit her dedication. Not unaware of the objections in holy Tradition to the ordination of women to the presbytery (and consecration to the episcopacy), the strategy of its proponents is to declare this innovation an “open question.” It is, in fact, not a subject to be debated. The theological and ecclesial facts need only to be reviewed to make the point. This book provides an understanding of those facts based on the only authorities (criteria) available to us — the Scriptures, the Fathers and the Canons. They have unalterably defined the place of women in the Church from the beginning.

REAL CHOICES: LISTENING TO WOMEN; LOOKING FOR ALTERNATIVES TO ABORTION

Author: FREDERICA MATHEWES-GREEN #: 10728
For years, concerned pro-life supporters have sought to decrease the number of abortions in America by championing babies and challenging women. Today, pro-life supporters across the country are realizing that it is time to move past the polarization of “women’s rights” versus “unborn children’s rights” to find practical solutions for mother and baby.

THE MINISTRY OF WOMEN IN THE CHURCH

Author: NSLATED BY FR. STEVEN BIGHAM #: 10729
This splendid translation of Elisabeth Behr-Sigel`s essays on issues related to the ministry of women in the church is a cause of joy and gratitude for English-speaking people interested in orthodox Christianity. If the present volume did nothing more than to widen and deepen discussion among the Orthodox concerning the community and ministry of women and men in the church, this alone would be sufficient reason to offer its author, and its English translators and publisher, our greatest gratitude.

MORE SPIRITED THAN LIONS: AN ORTHODOX RESPONSE TO FEMINISM AND A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO THE SPIRITUAL LIFE OF WOMEN

Author: SARAH ELIZABETH COWIE #: 10731
“Though feminism greatly increased respect for women’s talents and abilities, it became party to a widespread cultural attitude of self-pity and grabbiness, the antithesis of Christian faith. Orthodoxy, with its examples of noble, courageous women who sacrifice all for Christ, is the antidote, as Sarah Cowie shows in this much-needed and excellent book.“
