THE CHALLENGE OF OUR PAST: STUDIES IN ORTHODOX CANON LAW AND CHURCH HISTORY

Author: JOHN H. ERICKSON #: 10625
The Church is not a static object. It lives in time, in history. This means that its past is not just a matter of fact. It also poses a challenge. Christians are obliged to take seriously the problem of historical change. They must reflect on what gives the Church its identity in time and space, even in the midst of change.

THE PRIMACY OF PETER: ESSAYS IN ECCLESIOLOGY AND THE EARLY CHURCH

Author: #: 10629
In considering the issue which has divided Christians in the past and still divides them today, a group of Orthodox theologians from different theological perspectives reflect upon the scriptural passages which single out Peter among the disciples of Jesus. Koulomzine ("Peter`s Place in the Primitive Church") and Kesich ("Peter`s Primacy in the New Testament and the Early Tradition"), as exegetes, read the passages in the light of contemporary New Testament research. John Meyendorff ("St Peter in Byzantine Theology") looks at the history of exegesis: how were these passages read at the time when East and West split, quarrelling about the issue of authority in the Church? Finally, Schmemann ("The Idea of Primacy in Orthodox Ecclesiology") and Afanassieff ("The Church Which Presides in Love") look at the meaning of "primacy" as a permanent, through changing, factor of "catholic" ecclesiology.

CHRIST THE ETERNAL TAO

Author: HIERMONK DAMASCENE #: 10632
Not until now has the ancient wisdom of Lao Tzu been presented alongside the otherworldly revelation of Jesus Christ in a way that encompasses the full significance of both. Avoiding the common pitfalls of religious syncretism, Christ the Eternal Tao shows Lao Tzu’s Tao Teh Ching as a foreshadowing of what would be revealed by Christ, and Lao Tzu himself as a Far-Eastern "prophet" of the Incarnate God.

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS: THE GESTURE, THE MYSTERY, THE HISTORY

Author: ANDREAS ANDREOPOULOS FOREWORD BY FREDRICA MATHEWES-GREEN #: 10635

Explore the mystery of the ancient gesture that invites the Cross of Christ into our lives!

Millions of Christians around the world use the sign of the Cross — and have done so for centuries — as a gesture of blessing. It is practiced when alone, during worship, before sleep, upon waking, before eating, before travel, and many other times throughout the day. But, what does it mean? Where did it originate? What did the sign of the Cross mean to the first Christians, and how has this simple movement of the hand evolved over the centuries?

The sign of the Cross is literally a tracing of the Cross of Christ onto the body. By so doing, Christians invite the mystery of the Cross into their everyday lives. Now and for the first time, young Greek scholar Andreas Andreopoulos explains the tremendous meaning, mystery, and history of this dramatic gesture shared by Christians worldwide. This readable account will fascinate and inspire all who desire to know more about the inherited spiritual practices of everyday life.

HEALTH AND MEDICINE IN THE EASTERN ORTHODOX TRADITION:FAITH, LITURGY, AND WHOLENESS

Author: STANLEY SAMUEL HARAKAS #: 10637
This is the first comprehensive work on Eastern Orthodoxy in the context of health and modern medicine. The book is written to help Orthodox people understand more fully the relation of their tradition to the issues of health and medicine, as well as for those with a general interest in this formative tradition. Of particular note is the emphasis here on the continuously maintained tradition and practice of spiritual healing in the Orthodox Church. Whether through the healings of the saints or through the liturgical tradition of concern for the sick, especially in the sacrament of healing itself, Holy Unction, Orthodox Christianity attends to the concrete and interrelated reality of human illness in its spiritual, psychological, and physical dimensions.
