Theological Studies (181)
The questions raised in this collection of essays pertain to a wide range of subjects: history, theology, liturgy, canonical order, the ecumenical movement, and mission. One underlying question, from which they all stem and to which they all ultimately refer, gives them an inner unity and cohesion: What is the destiny of the Orthodox Church in this second half of the twentieth century, in a world and culture radically different from those that shaped the Orthodox mentality, thought-forms and life-styles of the past? Witty, provocative, Church, World, Mission is essential reading for all interested in the role of Orthodoxy in the world today.

In this reliable, fair, and engaging survey, Daniel Clendenin introduces Protestants to Eastern Orthodox history and theology with the hope that the two groups will come to see their traditions as complementary and learn to approach one another with a “hermeneutic of love” that fosters “mutual respect, toleration, and even support”.

This Festschrift honors the retirement of Bishop Kallistos Ware from thirty-five years of university teaching. It celebrates his joyful heart, which radiates a spirituality of one who has found his monastic "desert" among the "dreaming spires" of academia, and his "cell" in the university lecture room. The Festschrift comprises articles based on historical, theological, and spiritual themes — some of which are listed here:

The union of the churches is one of the crucial isses of our time. Yet it is often forgotten that any discussion about it must begin with an understanding of what the Church itself is. Before one can talk of healing the schism, one must know what lies at its root. This book focuses on such central questions. It is a unique and unprecedented contribution to the understanding of the different developments of the two major sections of the Christian Church, the Catholic and the Orthodox.

The division of Christendom into the Greek East and the Latin West has its origins far back in history but its consequences still affect Europe, and thus Western Civilization. Philip Sherrard's study seeks to indicate both the fundamental character and some of the consequences of this division. He points especially to the underlying metaphysical bases of Greek Chrisitan thought, and contrasts them with those of the Latin West: he argues persuasively that the philosophical and even theological differences, remote as they might seem from from practical affairs, are symptoms of a deep divergence of outlook that has profoundly affected the history of ideas and hence the whole course of European history. He exemplifies this by contrasting the relationships between the spiritual and temporal powers during the Byzantine period with those asumed by the medieval Papacy; by and analysis of the 'Platonic reaction' of such figures as Gemistos Plethon; and by an exposition of the intellectual background of the Renaissance, the Reformation, and finally, of the modern western world. His concluding chapters discuss the impact of modern western ideas on Greek life and letters during the last few centuries.

The Book of Revelation has inspired controversy ever since it was written in the first century. It was the last book to be accepted into the New Testament canon, and today a myriad of mutually contradictory end-times speculations claim to be based on its teachings. Fr. Lawrence Farley provides a sober, patristic interpretation that reads Revelation in its proper context of Jewish apocalyptic literature. He demonstrates that the most important lesson we can learn from Revelation today is the need to remain faithful in a time of widespread hostility to the Christian faith.
