EARLY CHRISTIAN WRITINGS: THE APOSTOLIC FATHERS

Author: #: 10222
The writings in this volume shed a glimmer of light, in an otherwise dark period, on the emerging traditions and organization of the infant Church. They are a selection from a group know as the Apostolic Fathers, so-called because several of the authors were most likely disciples of the Apostles themselves. Like much of the New Testament, their writings take the form of letters, and for the most part deal with practical problems of the life of the early Church, as it struggled in the face of persecution to establish itself in the Roman world. They give us a picture of Christianity still drawing on the theology and traditions of its parent religion, Judaism.

ON THE CHRISTIAN SACRAMENTS: WITH PARALLEL GREEK TEXT

Author: ST. CYRIL OF JERUSALEM EDITED BY F. L. CROSS #: 10225
These six Lectures on the Christian Sacraments were delivered in Jerusalem in the middle of the fourth century. They belong to a period of rapid transition for the Church. Less than forty years before, Christianity had been an illegal religion, the object of intense persecution. Now it was the favored religion of the state. Potential converts thronged the shining new basilicas, built through the beneficence of Constantine and his successors. Catechetical instruction was needed. It was provided by gifted preachers and teachers like St Cyril of Jerusalem.

GREGORY OF NYSSA: COMMENTARY ON THE INSCRIPTIONS OF THE PSALMS

Author: #: 10229
St. Gregory of Nyssa, one of the most spiritual of all the Fathers of the Church, undertakes to comment on the inscriptions found before most of the Psalms because he believes their inspired teaching leads our minds to true blessedness. As Gregory himself points out in his Preface, he found it necessary to go beyond the inscription and to examine the psalms as a whole in order to accurately comprehend their main theme. As a result of his effort, St. Gregory offers us a spiritually charged book.
