In about 679, Bede, a boy of seven, was presented by his family as an oblate to the monastery of Wearmouth, Northumbria. He spent the rest of his life as a monk, first at Wearmouth, and later at Jarrow, five miles away. Using the monastic library he became `the most learned man in Western Europe`, and one of the most influential on future generations. He read, and wrote, in a wide variety of fields--natural science, mathematics, and astronomy, grammar, rhetoric, geography, history, hagiography, theology, and above all interpretation of Holy Scripture. Bede combined his great learning with sanctity and a personal charm which still shines through his writings. His command of the Fathers of the Church and profane knowledge belie the name commonly given his age; despite invasions, privations, and limitations, Bede demonstrates that one corner of the European north was far from dark.

Dr. Toal's work contains what is in effect the spiritual inheritance of every Christian. The four volumes correspond with the main divisions of the Church year (arranged according to the (old) Western Liturgical year; however their value is still immense) and offer, in English and in relation to the Gospel for each Sunday and greater festival or feast, an appropriate choice of sermons given by the great Fathers of the Church to their faithful congregations — men and women who clearly faced many of the same problems as we do today.

Until now, the majority of John`s homilies on the saints and martyrs have been ignored. Mr. Farrell... has given us a text which is faithful to Saint Photios` original Greek text; a theological overview of the filioque controversy - an essential controversy in the history of the whole Church - that is not too technical to be understood by an untrained theologian; and an historical view of this subject and Saint Photios that presents no problem to the reader untrained in historical investigation. His is not the only translation to be had in a modern language, but it certainly is the only translation which consciously attempts to reach the average Orthodox reader... introducing the faithful to the inner spirit of the Patristic witness. -Archmandrite Chrysostomos
