The entire Orthodox world venerates the humble Russian monk, St. Seraphim of Sarov (1759–1833). The Serbian Orthodox Saint, Basil of Ostrog, has continued to be a powerful heavenly intercessor since his repose in the seventeenth century. The miracles that occur at his incorrupt relics, which are treasured at Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro, are without number. Christians and Muslims alike come before his relics and find healing of their gravest illnesses and afflictions. Healings of Soul and Body chronicles nearly two hundred of these miracles, most of them from modern times. Through these accounts one acquires a vivid sense of the Saint`s closeness, and of the mercy of God, Who is wondrous in His saints.

In the autumn of 1892 a young Russian peasant named Simeon from the province of Tambov was drawn to that ancient repository of Orthodox spirituality, Mt Athos. He had done his military service and now came to the Russian Monastery of St Panteleimon, to embark on long years of spiritual combat lasting until his death in 1938. Although he was unlearned and ignorant in the ordinary sense, tireless inner strivings gave him authentic personal experience of Christianity identical with that of many of the early ascetic Desert Fathers.
