Great-Martyr Tsar Lazar was one of the greatest men in the history of the Serbian nation and the entire world. He ruled the Kingdom of Serbia, which was united by him, at a most pivotal moment in history. At a time when the Moslem horde was threatening to overrun all of Europe, this truly valiant leader, having been inspired by an angelic vision, sacrificed himself and his army at the fateful battle of Kosovo on June 15, 1389. Choosing the heavenly kingdom over the earthly one, he and his army went to victorious martyrdom. When receiving the Eucharist at the Divine Liturgy prior to battle, they all chanted in unison, For the honorable Cross and golden freedom!, followed by the famous words of St. Sava of Serbia, Give up everything for Christ, but Christ for nothing! As a result of the battle that Tsar Lazar waged on Kosovo Field, the Moslems never regained strength to take Western Europe. Thus, the Orthodox Kingdom of Serbia must always be acknowledged by Western Europe as that sacrificial kingdom which stood in the path of total Moslem captivity.

To come closer to Serafim we have to enter imaginatively into his world, into the very physical atmosphere of the forest, into the peculiar demands of the climate in that part of Tambov province, the mental habits, the superstitions of the people and the yearly round of Russian Orthodox piety. And through having lived in the midst of all these aspects of Russian life and traditions, Julia de Beausobre manages to stimulate our imaginations, to say nothing of how she evokes for us the impact on that world of wider events in Russia and beyond.

St. Eustathios was a general in the Roman Army and friend of Emperor Trajan. After being converted to Christianity through a divine vision, he was stripped of imperial honors, imprisoned, and exiled with his wife and two young children. He was separated from his family under the most tragic circumstances, only to be reunited with them in glory thirteen years later, shortly before their martyrdom. St. Eustathios is praised in the hymnography of the Church as a second Job because of his incredible endurance in hardships and patient perseverance in temptations. The life of Saints Eustathios, Theopisti, Agapios and Theopistos are an inspiration and an example for all Christians, especially those who encounter numerous trials in their spiritual life.
